They came to him and said, \u201cTeacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren\u2019t swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn\u2019t we?\u201d\nBut Jesus knew their hypocrisy. \u201cWhy are you trying to trap me?\u201d he asked. \u201cBring me a denarius and let me look at it.\u201d They brought the coin, and he asked them, \u201cWhose portrait is this? And whose inscription?\u201d\n\u201cCaesar\u2019s,\u201d they replied.\nThen Jesus said to them, \u201cGive to Caesar what is Caesar\u2019s and to God what is God\u2019s.\u201d\nAnd they were amazed at him.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who were the Pharisees? The Herodians?<\/li><li>What was their motivation in asking Jesus this question? Why did they begin with &#8220;you are a man of integrity&#8230; you aren&#8217;t swayed by men&#8230; you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth&#8221;?<\/li><li>Why do they ask if paying taxes to Caesar is &#8220;right&#8221; (literally &#8220;lawful&#8221;)? What was Jesus&#8217; reply?<\/li><li>Read 1 Peter 2:13-17, Romans 13:1-7, and Luke 3:13. What do these add to your understanding of Jesus&#8217; teaching?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>Marriage at the Resurrection<\/strong>\n12:18-27pp \u2013 Mt 22:23-33; Lk 20:27-38\nThen the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. \u201cTeacher,\u201d they said, \u201cMoses wrote for us that if a man\u2019s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?\u201d\nJesus replied, \u201cAre you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Now about the dead rising\u2013have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, \u2018I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob\u2019 ? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who were the Sadducees? What was their distinguishing belief, and what do we learn from that about them?<\/li><li>What does the Old Testament say about resurrection and eternal life? Why would the Sadducees have a problem with this?<\/li><li>What was the Old Testament practice that they used for the basis of their question? (Deut 25:5-9) What was the point they were trying to prove?<\/li><li>What does Jesus&#8217; answer do to challenge their point of view?<\/li><li>Look at Dan 12:2, 2 Sam 12:23, and John 11:25.
