{"id":87,"date":"2022-07-10T21:26:15","date_gmt":"2022-07-10T21:26:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/txcolliers.net\/biblestudy\/?p=87"},"modified":"2022-07-24T18:00:55","modified_gmt":"2022-07-24T18:00:55","slug":"triumphal-entry-and-temple-turmoil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/txcolliers.net\/biblestudy\/?p=87","title":{"rendered":"Triumphal Entry and Temple Turmoil"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 11:1-11\n<strong>The Triumphal Entry<\/strong> <strong><em>(Palm Sunday)<\/em><\/strong>\n11:1-10pp \u2013 Mt 21:1-9; Lk 19:29-38 \n11:7-10pp - Jn 12:12-15\nAs they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, \u201cGo to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, \u2018Why are you doing this?\u2019 tell him, \u2018The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.\u2019 \u201d\nThey went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, \u201cWhat are you doing, untying that colt?\u201d They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,\n\u201cHosanna!\u2019\u201d\n\u201cBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!\u201d\n\u201cBlessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!\u201d\n\u201cHosanna in the highest!\u201d\nJesus entered Jerusalem and went to the temple. (See Luke 19:39-40)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 11:12-19\n<strong>Jesus Clears the Temple<\/strong> <strong><em>(Monday)<\/em><\/strong>\n11:12-14pp \u2013 Mt 21:18-22 \n11:15-18pp - Mt 21:12-16; Lk 19:45-47; Jn 2:13-16\nThe next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, \u201cMay no one ever eat fruit from you again.\u201d And his disciples heard him say it.\nOn reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, \u201cIs it not written:\n\u201c \u2018My house will be called\na house of prayer for all nations\u2019 ?\nBut you have made it \u2018a den of robbers.\u2019\u201d\nThe chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.\nWhen evening came, they went out of the city.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This passage and the ones that follow interweave the narrative of the cursing of the fig tree with the cleansing of the temple.  How do you think these two seemingly separate things may be related?<\/li><li>Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?<\/li><li>Why did Jesus drive out the &#8220;businessmen&#8221; from the temple?  How did the chief priests and scribes react, and why?  What lessons do we learn for ourselves today?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 11:20-25\n<strong>The Withered Fig Tree<\/strong> <strong><em>(Tuesday Morning)<\/em><\/strong>\n11:20-24pp \u2013 Mt 21:19-22\n\nIn the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. Peter remembered and said to Jesus, \u201cRabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!\u201d\n\u201cHave faith in God,\u201d Jesus answered.  \u201cI tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, \u2018Go, throw yourself into the sea,\u2019 and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.\u2019\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was the lesson from the cursing of the fig tree?<\/li><li>How could this teaching from Jesus be taken out of context today?
