On the way he asked them, \u201cWho do people say I am?\u201d\nThey replied, \u201cSome say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.\u201d\n\u201cBut what about you?\u201d he asked. \u201cWho do you say I am?\u201d\nPeter answered, \u201cYou are the Christ.\u2019\u201d\nJesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why would people think that Jesus was John the Baptist?  Elijah?  One of the Prophets?  What was significant in each of these?<\/li><li>What is Peter saying when he says to Jesus: &#8220;You are the Christ (Messiah)&#8221;?<\/li><li>Why does Jesus warn them not to tell anyone about him?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 8:31 - 9:1\n<strong>Jesus Predicts His Death<\/strong>\n8:31-9:1pp \u2013 Mt 16:21-28; Lk 9:22-27\nHe then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.\nBut when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. \u201cGet behind me, Satan!\u201d he said. \u201cYou do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.\u201d\nThen he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: \u201cIf anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father\u2019s glory with the holy angels.\u201d\nAnd he said to them, \u201cI tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What was Jesus teaching his disciples?  Why do you think Peter &#8220;rebuked&#8221; Jesus?<\/li><li>What was Jesus&#8217; challenge to the crowd and his disciples?  What does this look like in our lives today?<\/li><li>The last verse (9:1) has been interpreted in various ways.
