When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished. \u201cWhere did this man get these things? \u201d they said. \u201cWhat is this wisdom that has been given to him, and how are these miracles performed by his hands? Isn\u2019t this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren\u2019t his sisters here with us? \u201d So they were offended by him.\nJesus said to them, \u201cA prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.\u201d He was not able to do a miracle there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and healed them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. He was going around the villages teaching.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How would you describe Jesus&#8217; reception at his hometown synagogue?<\/li><li>What do you make of Jesus&#8217; statement about &#8220;A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown&#8221;?<\/li><li>What does it mean that &#8220;Jesus was not able to do a miracle there&#8230;&#8221;?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>Commissioning the Twelve<\/strong>\nHe summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean spirits. He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a staff \u2014 no bread, no traveling bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not put on an extra shirt. He said to them, \u201cWhenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place. If any place does not welcome you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.\u201d So they went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons, anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why did Jesus send the disciples out the way that he did?<\/li><li>What was the result?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>John the Baptist Beheaded<\/strong>\nKing Herod heard about it, because Jesus\u2019s name had become well known. Some said, \u201cJohn the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that\u2019s why miraculous powers are at work in him.\u201d But others said, \u201cHe\u2019s Elijah.\u201d Still others said, \u201cHe\u2019s a prophet, like one of the prophets from long ago.\u201d\nWhen Herod heard of it, he said, \u201cJohn, the one I beheaded, has been raised! \u201d\nFor Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip\u2019s wife, because he had married her. John had been telling Herod, \u201cIt is not lawful for you to have your brother\u2019s wife.\u201d So Herodias held a grudge against him and wanted to kill him. But she could not, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed, and yet he liked to listen to him.\nAn opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet for his nobles, military commanders, and the leading men of Galilee. When Herodias\u2019s own daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, \u201cAsk me whatever you want, and I\u2019ll give it to you.\u201d He promised her with an oath: \u201cWhatever you ask me I will give you, up to half my kingdom.\u201d\nShe went out and said to her mother, \u201cWhat should I ask for? \u201d\n\u201cJohn the Baptist\u2019s head,\u201d she said.\nAt once she hurried to the king and said, \u201cI want you to give me John the Baptist\u2019s head on a platter immediately.\u201d Although the king was deeply distressed, because of his oaths and the guests he did not want to refuse her. The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John\u2019s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison, brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother. When John\u2019s disciples heard about it, they came and removed his corpse and placed it in a tomb.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The timeline in this passage is a bit confusing. It also includes a significant &#8220;flashback&#8221; episode.<\/li><li>What does this passage tell us about John the Baptist?  About Herod?
