The whole crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. Then, passing by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, \u201cFollow me,\u201d and he got up and followed him.\nWhile he was reclining at the table in Levi\u2019s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who were following him. When the scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples, \u201cWhy does he eat with tax collectors and sinners? \u201d\nWhen Jesus heard this, he told them, \u201cIt is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I didn\u2019t come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>What do we know about Matthew from this account?<\/li><li>What do you think about Jesus\u2019 statement in verse 17?\u00a0 Who were (are) those who \u201cthink they are righteous\u201d? How about \u201cthose who know they are sinners\u201d?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>A Question about Fasting<\/strong>\nMark 2:18-22\nNow John\u2019s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. People came and asked him, \u201cWhy do John\u2019s disciples and the Pharisees\u2019 disciples fast, but your disciples do not fast? \u201d\nJesus said to them, \u201cThe wedding guests cannot fast while the groom is with them, can they? As long as they have the groom with them, they cannot fast. But the time will come when the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new patch pulls away from the old cloth, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\" start=\"3\"><li>Why was fasting a \u201cbig deal\u201d to the Pharisees?<\/li><li>What do you make of the illustrations of the cloth and the wineskins?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>Lord of the Sabbath<\/strong>\nMark 2:23-28\nOn the Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way, picking some heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, \u201cLook, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath? \u201d\nHe said to them, \u201cHave you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry \u2014 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence \u2014 which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests \u2014 and also gave some to his companions? \u201d Then he told them, \u201cThe Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. So then, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How was the Sabbath made to meet the needs of the people?\u00a0 How is this an encouragement to you?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>Jesus Heals on the Sabbath<\/strong>\nMark 3:1-6\nJesus entered the synagogue again, and a man was there who had a shriveled hand. In order to accuse him, they were watching him closely to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath. He told the man with the shriveled hand, \u201cStand before us.\u201d Then he said to them, \u201cIs it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save life or to kill? \u201d But they were silent. After looking around at them with anger, he was grieved at the hardness of their hearts and told the man, \u201cStretch out your hand.\u201d So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. Immediately the Pharisees went out and started plotting with the Herodians against him, how they might kill him.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Why was Jesus\u2019 \u201cnon-observance\u201d of the Sabbath such a threat to the religious authorities?<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sinners and Sabbaths The Call of Levi (Matthew) Mark 2:13-17 Jesus went out again beside the sea.
