It began just as the prophet Isaiah had written:\n\n<em>\u201cLook, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,\nand he will prepare your way.\nHe is a voice shouting in the wilderness,\n\u2018Prepare the way for the LORD\u2019s coming!\nClear the road for him!\u2019\u201d<\/em>\n\n[Read Isaiah 40:1-5 for context]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Who was Isaiah and why did he give this prophesy?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>What is the significance of the wilderness?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 1:4-6 \nThis messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.\n\n[Read Luke 1:76-79 for context]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>What was the significance of &#8220;John&#8217;s baptism&#8221;?&nbsp; What was involved?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Who was John&#8217;s audience?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Why do you think the author included these details of John&#8217;s appearance? [See 2 Kings 1:8]<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 1:7-8 \nJohn announced: \u201cSomeone is coming soon who is greater than I am\u2014so much greater that I\u2019m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!\u201d\n\n[Read Matthew 3:1-12 for context]\n[Read John 1:14-18 for context]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you had been in John&#8217;s audience, what would your reaction to this description have been?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>The Baptism and Temptation of Jesus<\/strong>\nMark 1:9-11 \nOne day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and John baptized him in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Holy Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, \u201cYou are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.\u201d\n\n[Read John 1:32-34 for context]<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What details in the succinct account in the above verses stand out to you?&nbsp; What does this passage say about Jesus?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 1:12-13 \nThe Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Both Matthew and Luke detail Jesus&#8217; time in the wilderness and his temptation. Why do you think that Mark omits this detail?&nbsp; What detail does Mark include that Matthew and Luke omit, and why might this be significant?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 1:14-15 \nLater on, after John was arrested, Jesus went into Galilee, where he preached God\u2019s Good News. \u201cThe time promised by God has come at last!\u201d he announced. \u201cThe Kingdom of God is near!
