This section immediately follows what we saw in chapter 3: The author has just described how Moses led the people through the wilderness, and because of the people’s unbelief they were not able to enter into the promised land. This was described as “entering God’s rest”. Now, the author connects that to a different concept of God’s rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Greater Rest for God's People<\/strong>\nHebrews 4:1-4\nGod\u2019s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. For this good news\u2014that God has prepared this rest\u2014has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn\u2019t share the faith of those who listened to God. For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,\n\u201cIn my anger I took an oath:\n\u2018They will never enter my place of rest,\u2019\u201d<\/em>\neven though this rest has been ready since he made the world. We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: \u201cOn the seventh day God rested from all his work.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

    The Time Is Now<\/strong>\nHebrews 4:5-11\nBut in the other passage God said, \u201cThey will never enter my place of rest.\u201d\nSo God\u2019s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted:\n\u201cToday when you hear his voice,\ndon\u2019t harden your hearts.\u201d<\/em>\nNow if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God\u2019s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n

      The Word of God<\/strong>\nHebrews 4:12-13\nFor the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n
