Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and went right into the high priest\u2019s courtyard. There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.\nInside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find evidence against Jesus, so they could put him to death. But they couldn\u2019t find any. Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they contradicted each other. Finally, some men stood up and gave this false testimony: \u201cWe heard him say, \u2018I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.\u2019\u201d But even then they didn\u2019t get their stories straight!\nThen the high priest stood up before the others and asked Jesus, \u201cWell, aren\u2019t you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?\u201d But Jesus was silent and made no reply. Then the high priest asked him, \u201cAre you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?\u201d\nJesus said, \u201cI AM. And you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God\u2019s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.\u201d\nThen the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, \u201cWhy do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy. What is your verdict?\u201d\n\u201cGuilty!\u201d they all cried. \u201cHe deserves to die!\u201d\nThen some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him and beat him with their fists. \u201cProphesy to us,\u201d they jeered. And the guards slapped him as they took him away.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>About what time did the meeting with the Sanhedrin take place?  What surprises you about this account?<\/li><li>What was the charge against Jesus that was brought before the council? <\/li><li>What was the claim that Jesus made that resulted in his condemnation by the council?  What was significant about this?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 14:66-72\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Peter Denies Jesus<\/span><\/strong>\nMeanwhile, Peter was in the courtyard below. One of the servant girls who worked for the high priest came by and noticed Peter warming himself at the fire. She looked at him closely and said, \u201cYou were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth.\u201d\nBut Peter denied it. \u201cI don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d he said, and he went out into the entryway. Just then, a rooster crowed.\nWhen the servant girl saw him standing there, she began telling the others, \u201cThis man is definitely one of them!\u201d But Peter denied it again.\nA little later some of the other bystanders confronted Peter and said, \u201cYou must be one of them, because you are a Galilean.\u201d\nPeter swore, \u201cA curse on me if I\u2019m lying\u2014I don\u2019t know this man you\u2019re talking about!\u201d And immediately the rooster crowed the second time.\nSuddenly, Jesus\u2019 words flashed through Peter\u2019s mind: \u201cBefore the rooster crows twice, you will deny three times that you even know me.\u201d And he broke down and wept.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What prompted Peter&#8217;s insistence that he didn&#8217;t know Jesus?<\/li><li>Describe the spiritual and emotional state of Peter on realizing his failure.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 15:1-15\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jesus\u2019 Trial before Pilate<\/span><\/strong>\nVery early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law\u2014the entire high council\u2014met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.\nPilate asked Jesus, \u201cAre you the king of the Jews?\u201d\nJesus replied, \u201cYou have said it.\u201d\nThen the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes, and Pilate asked him, \u201cAren\u2019t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?\u201d But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate\u2019s surprise.\nNow it was the governor\u2019s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner\u2014anyone the people requested. One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising. The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.\n\u201cWould you like me to release to you this \u2018King of the Jews\u2019?\u201d Pilate asked. (For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.) But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus. Pilate asked them, \u201cThen what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?\u201d\nThey shouted back, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d\n\u201cWhy?\u201d Pilate demanded. \u201cWhat crime has he committed?\u201d\nBut the mob roared even louder, \u201cCrucify him!\u201d\nSo to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How was Jesus&#8217; encounter with Pilate different than that before the Sanhedrin?<\/li><li>What was Pilate&#8217;s reaction to Jesus&#8217; response (or lack thereof)?<\/li><li>Describe the role Pilate played in Jesus&#8217; condemnation.  How about Barabbas? The &#8220;Leading Priests&#8221;?  The crowd?
