Some interpret the entire chapter as addressing the Second Coming of Christ; others see a prediction of the suffering to come to Israel with the destruction of the Temple in A.D. 70.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:1-2\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Prediction of the Temple's Destruction<\/span><\/strong>\nAs Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, \u201cTeacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls.\u201d\nJesus replied, \u201cYes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What were the disciples impressed by? Why would they have been shocked and concerned by Jesus&#8217; response?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:3-8\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Timing of the Temple's Destruction<\/span><\/strong>\nLater, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, \u201cTell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?\u201d\nJesus replied, \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, \u2018I am the Messiah.\u2019 They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don\u2019t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won\u2019t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What specifically were the disciples asking Jesus about?<\/li><li>Assuming that Jesus was answering the question they asked, what does he say will be the sign that the Temple destruction is at hand?<\/li><li>What was happening in this part of the world at the time this conversation took place? Immediately afterward?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:9-13\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Encouragement for the Disciples<\/span><\/strong>\n\u201cWhen these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. For the Good News must first be preached to all nations. But when you are arrested and stand trial, don\u2019t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.\n\u201cA brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What does Jesus say will be the experience of the disciples when all this takes place?  Can you think of any instances where the above was fulfilled in the lives of the disciples?<\/li><li>What encouragement do you gain from this promise of Jesus to his disciples?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:14-23\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Day of Destruction\/War in Judea<\/span><\/strong>\n\u201cThe day is coming when you will see the sacrilegious object that causes desecration [abomination of desolation] standing where he should not be.\u201d (Reader, pay attention!) \u201cThen those in Judea must flee to the hills. A person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return even to get a coat. How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. And pray that your flight will not be in winter. For there will be greater anguish in those days than at any time since God created the world. And it will never be so great again. In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days.\n\u201cThen if anyone tells you, \u2018Look, here is the Messiah,\u2019 or \u2018There he is,\u2019 don\u2019t believe it. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God\u2019s chosen ones. Watch out! I have warned you about this ahead of time!<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What might Jesus be referring to when he speaks of the &#8220;abomination of desolation&#8221;?  Why do you think Mark includes the admonishment: &#8220;Reader, pay attention!&#8221;?<\/li><li>What is Jesus&#8217; specific instruction to his audience?  What is he concerned that his disciples know about the coming destruction?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:24-27\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Coming of the Son of Man (The \"Parousia\" or Second Coming)<\/strong><\/span>\n\u201cAt that time, after the anguish of those days,\nthe sun will be darkened,\nthe moon will give no light,\nthe stars will fall from the sky,\nand the powers in the heavens will be shaken.\nThen everyone will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds with great power and glory. And he will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the world\u2014from the farthest ends of the earth and heaven.\n<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What does Jesus describe in this passage? What is the stated timing?<\/li><li>Jesus quotes from several Old Testament prophets, including Isaiah, Amos, Zechariah, Joel and Ezekiel regarding The Day of the Lord. What will that Day be like?<\/li><li>Why do you think Jesus includes this in his answer to the disciples&#8217; question about the Temple&#8217;s destruction?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:28-31\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Parable of the Fig Tree (Timing of the Temple's Destruction)<\/span><\/strong>\n\u201cNow learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branches bud and its leaves begin to sprout, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that [it] is very near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene before all these things take place. Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Depending on your Bible translation, this passage may seem to refer to either the Destruction of Jerusalem or to the Second Coming of Christ. What might make you think it refers to one or the other?<\/li><li>When Jesus says &#8220;Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear&#8221;, what do you think he might he have meant? <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">Mark 13:32-37\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Parable of the Watchful Servant (Timing of the Second Coming)<\/span><\/strong>\n\u201cHowever, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don\u2019t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!\n\u201cThe coming of the Son of Man can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. When he left home, he gave each of his slaves instructions about the work they were to do, and he told the gatekeeper to watch for his return. You, too, must keep watch! For you don\u2019t know when the master of the household will return\u2014in the evening, at midnight, before dawn, or at daybreak. Don\u2019t let him find you sleeping when he arrives without warning. I say to you what I say to everyone: Watch for him!\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What is the admonition that Jesus gives his disciples?
